What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a cosmedical procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair.
During laser hair removal, a laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the tube-shaped sacs within the skin (hair follicles) that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth.
Although laser hair removal effectively delays hair growth for long periods, it usually doesn’t result in permanent hair removal. Multiple laser hair removal treatments are needed for initial hair removal, and maintenance treatments might be needed as well. Laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair, but it can be successfully used on all skin types.
At Col18 Beauty and Massage we use the most advanced and gold standard laser device CANDELA GentleMax Pro® to provide the Laser Hair Removal. This is the most effective and great results treatment for all dark hairs and all skin colours.

Benefits of Laser Hair Removal
1. Minimal Side Effects
There are only a few minor side effects of laser hair removal, and those which do occur tend not to last more than a few days.
2. Cost Effective
Once you begin your journey with laser hair removal, you will no longer need to spend your money on regular expensive wax treatments, depilatory creams, razors or other methods of hair removal. It may be more cost up front, but over your life, you will save a huge amount by no longer having to spend on these procedures. You will also save yourself a great deal of time that would otherwise be spent shaving or waxing.
3. No Ingrown Hairs
Unlike waxing, threading and epilating, you will not have to put up with painful and unsightly ingrown hairs. Neither will you have to tolerate razor burns or irritation. Laser hair removal can even improve ingrown hairs.

How to prepare
Before laser hair removal, schedule a consultation with our therapists to determine if this is an appropriate treatment option for you. Our therapists will likely do the following:
• Review your skin and health history, including medication use, history of skin disorders or scarring, and past hair removal procedures.
• Discuss risks, benefits and expectations, including what laser hair removal can and can’t do for you.
At the consultation, discuss a treatment plan and related costs. Laser hair removal is usually with some special deals.
Our therapists will also offer specific instructions to prepare for laser hair removal.
These might include:
Staying out of the sun: Follow your therapist’s advice for avoiding sun exposure before and after treatment. Whenever you go out, apply a broad-spectrum, SPF50+ sunscreen.
Lightening your skin: Avoid any sunless skin creams that darken your skin.
Avoiding other hair removal methods: Plucking, waxing and electrolysis can disturb the hair follicle and should be avoided at least four weeks before treatment.
Avoiding blood-thinning medications: Ask your therapist about what medications to avoid before the procedure.
Shaving treatment area: Shaving is recommended the day before laser treatment. It removes hair above the skin that can result in surface skin damage from burnt hairs, but it leaves the hair shaft intact below the surface.

What to expect
Laser hair removal usually requires eight and more treatments. The interval between treatments will vary depending on the treatment parts. On areas where hair grows quickly, such as the upper lip, the treatment might be repeated in 2 weeks. On areas of slow hair growth, such as the back, the treatment might be every 4-5 weeks.
Results
Hairs do not fall out immediately, but you will shed them over a period of days to weeks. This may look like continued hair growth. The repeated treatments are usually necessary because hair growth and loss naturally occur in a cycle, and laser treatment works best with hair follicles in the new-growth stage.
Results vary significantly and are difficult to predict. Most people experience hair reduction that lasts several months, and it might last for years. However, laser hair reduction doesn’t guarantee permanent hair removal. When hair regrows, it’s usually finer and lighter in color.
You might need maintenance laser treatments for long-term hair reduction.

What skin tones can get Laser Hair Removal?
At Col18 Beauty and Massage we treat all skin tones with our medical-grade laser technology. Our Laser technicians use the Fitzpatrick Classification scale to determine your skin tone at the consultation and select the most suitable setting for your laser hair removal treatment. Please be advised that your settings may change throughout your course to ensure optimal results.
Dynamic Dual Wavelength Technology:
By combining the benefits of both Alexandrite and Nd:YAG lasers, this device can effectively target a broad spectrum of hair colors and skin types. This versatility ensures that practitioners can cater to a diverse clientele, delivering optimal results for everyone. Laser hair removal unfortunately does not work on grey, blonde or white hairs, however our fabulous top of the range machine will work on 6 skin types.
What Laser Hair Removal machines do you use?
At Col18 Beauty and Massage, we use leading laser hair removal technology and advanced cooling machines to cool the skin before, during, and after treatment to minimise discomfort.
Does Laser Hair Removal hurt?
Laser hair removal is described as virtually painless, especially compared to waxing. Each pulse lasts less than a second and may feel like slight tingling or a rubber band snap in sensitive areas. Advanced cooling is used to reduce heat sensation and discomfort.
What is the minimum age for Laser Hair Removal?
At Col18 Beauty and Massage, we recommend treatment for clients aged 18 or older for optimal results. In some cases, treatment is available for clients aged 12 and over, and for Brazilian areas the recommended minimum age is 16. A parent or guardian must attend the first treatment and sign a consent form for clients under 18.
How often do I need to get Laser Hair Removal?
Treatment is generally required every 4–6 weeks depending on hair type, skin type, and treatment area. Facial treatments may be done every 2 weeks unless advised otherwise. The clinic recommends 8–12 treatments, followed by maintenance every 2–3 months for permanent hair reduction.
How do I prepare for laser hair removal?
Preparation includes:
Shave the treatment area 24 hours prior
Avoid deodorants, body oils, and moisturiser for 24 hours prior
Avoid Vitamin A/Retinol products for 1 week prior
Avoid direct sun exposure for 4 weeks prior
Avoid incidental sun exposure for 2 weeks prior
Avoid fake tan and tanning products for 2 weeks prior
Avoid solariums for 4 weeks prior
Avoid skin treatments such as skin needling, chemical peels, and resurfacing for 2 weeks prior
Avoid certain peels for 4 weeks prior
Avoid tanning drugs such as Melanotan II for 6 months prior
Can I get Laser Hair Removal if I have Epilepsy?
Clients with epilepsy are advised to consult their doctor and obtain medical clearance before treatment. Protective eyewear options are also provided during treatment.
Can I do treatments during pregnancy?
If pregnant or breastfeeding, clients are advised to consult their obstetrician. Some treatments may not be suitable, and a medical note may be required.
Do you offer numbing for Laser Hair Removal?
No. Topical numbing creams are considered not safe or effective for laser hair removal because the sensation is felt in the hair follicle rather than on the skin, and numbing cream cannot penetrate deeply enough.
Can I have Laser Hair Removal if I am on certain medications?
Certain medications can cause photosensitivity and affect the skin’s reaction to treatment. These include, but are not limited to, oral and topical vitamin A, antibiotics, and some antidepressants. Clients should speak with a medical professional and obtain clearance before treatment.
Can I have Laser Hair Removal over the top of tattoos?
No. The clinic cannot treat directly over tattoos, but can treat around them with a 3 cm gap.
Aftercare instructions
After treatment:
Avoid active skincare for 3–5 days
Avoid makeup, spray tan, and self-tanning for at least 24 hours
Avoid heat sources, exercise, and swimming until recovered, minimum 24 hours
Avoid skin treatments, cosmetic tattooing, rubbing, or stimulation of the treated area for 3–5 days
Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks
Use a gentle cleanser and recommended aftercare products
Wear SPF 50+ every day
Why do I still have so much hair after laser hair removal?
Clients may notice more hair 1–3 weeks after treatment as follicles in the growth cycle begin to shed. Once redness and swelling have settled, gentle exfoliation can help hairs shed faster.
Important Notes
Results vary and cannot be guaranteed. We recommend coming in to speak with our technicians for an in-depth consultation to discuss how the treatment works, whether it is right for your skin type, and the expected results in line with your treatment goals.
